Don't Neglect Your Disaster Recovery Plan
by JEB & Company Staff
When setting up a disaster recovery plan for your business, you need to make sure that you have the two key elements covered; data backup and data recovery. Basically you need to make sure that all necessary data is properly backed up and that you have a way to recover the data in the event of a disaster. This is easier said than done. First off, simply copying all of your data to an external hard drive does not qualify as properly backing up your data. The next item that you need to consider in regards to backing up your data is where do you store it.The last step is to determine how you will recover your data in the event of a disaster and how your company will function. Some questions you need to consider during this part of the planning stage;
  • What is our Service Level Agreement (SLA) with our hardware vendor?
  • Where do we keep the various software disks if we need to rebuild a server?
  • How long can we be down?
  • Who is responsible for the recovery?
Each plan will be different and each plan should be documented in great detail. But the most important thing is that you have a plan in place to recover from a disaster and that you are satisfied with the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) that you have established. It is very important that key management is aware of the RTO that has been established and that they are comfortable with the length of time that it will take to recover from a disaster. Be Careful What You Click
Please be careful what you click when you are online. If you receive an email from someone that you don't know and they want you to click on a link, DON'T DO IT! If you receive a message from a friend on Facebook asking you to click on a link to see a video of yourself, DON'T DO IT! If you receive an email from your bank asking you to click on a link to update your records, DON'T DO IT! Make sure that you have an installed Anti Virus application installed and that it is updated daily. Additionally it is a good idea to have a Spyware application installed as well.
