Today is Not a Good Day to     Go Phishing!
Tip of the Month by JEB &  Company Staff

Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as user names, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging, and now via social media. It often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one.
You can take steps to avoid phishing attempts by slightly modifying your browsing habits. When contacted about an account needing to be"verified," it is a sensible precaution to contact the company from which the e-mail apparently originates to check that the e-mail is legitimate. Alternatively, the address that you know is the company's genuine website can be typed into the address bar of the browser, rather than trusting any hyperlinks in the suspected phishing message.  Bottom line:  When in doubt, delete the email and pick up the phone to call the company that wants to "verify" your information.

McMurdie Law Office

Cristi McMurdie

McMurdie Law Office has been very active during this recession by handling many types of family law and estate planning cases. For example, Ms. McMurdie recently went to trial and helped a father gain custody; another case required a termination of parental rights with the child's adoption set only a month away and a victory for the whole family. In probate matters, Ms. McMurdie helped co-conservators to properly invest the money to conserve the estate over time; and on another case, enforcing a trust to follow the wishes of the client's deceased parents. McMurdie Law Office helps the client determine if it is worthwhile to go to court and to weigh out the pros and cons before going down that road because it is very expensive and stressful for people. JEB & Co. keeps McMurdie Law Office computers running smoothly because when we have to make documents, we cannot afford down time. Also, check out A1 Mediation Services, the subsidiary company that provides mediation instead of litigation; where Ms. McMurdie is a neutral third party retained to help people reach agreement. The Referral Engine
by John Jantsch

The small business guru behind Duct Tape Marketing shares his most valuable lesson: how to get your customers to do your best marketing for you.

The power of glitzy advertising and elaborate marketing campaigns is on the wane; word- of-mouth referrals are what drive business today. People trust the recommendation of a friend, family member, colleague, or even stranger with similar tastes over anything thrust at them by a faceless company.

Most business owners believe that whether customers refer them is entirely out of their hands. But science shows that people can't help recommending products and services to their friends-it's an instinct wired deep in the brain. And smart businesses can tap into that hardwired desire.

Marketing expert John Jantsch offers practical techniques for harnessing the power of referrals to ensure a steady flow of new customers. Keep those customers happy, and they will refer your business to even more customers. Some of Jantsch's strategies include:

-Talk with your customers, not at them. Thanks to social networking sites, companies of any size have the opportunity to engage with their customers on their home turf as never before-but the key is listening.

-The sales team is the most important part of your marketing team. Salespeople are the company's main link to customers, who are the main source of referrals. Getting them on board with your referral strategy is critical.

-Educate your customers. Referrals are only helpful if they're given to the right people. Educate your customers about whom they should be talking to.

The secret to generating referrals lies in understanding the "Customer Referral Cycle"-the way customers refer others to your company who, in turn, generate even more referrals. Businesses can ensure a healthy referral cycle by moving customers and prospects along the path of Know, Like, Trust, Try, Buy, Repeat, and Refer. If everyone in an organization keeps this sequence in mind, Jantsch argues, your business will generate referrals like a well-oiled machine.

This practical, smart, and original guide is essential reading for any company looking to grow without a fat marketing budget.

A Quick Response (QR) code is a two-dimensional code that can be scanned by smartphone cameras to automatically pull up text, photos, videos, music and URLs.  These codes have become mobile-friendly ways to point people in the offline space to online resources. There is an endlees amount of possibilities that business can use to market their brand with QR codes.

Google has begun a big push by sending window decals to more than 100,000 U.S. businesses that they've identified as the most sought-after on Google and Google Maps.

So take out your phone and scan the QR code above and see where it takes you. If you do not have a bar code reader on your phone there are several free ones available for both iPhone and Android phones.

Earlier this month Facebook threw its hat into the check in craze with its new Places feature. They have joined front-runners Yelp and Foursquare as another option to check in and let your network know where you are. Not surprisingly, Facebook already received privacy complaints as their new Places feature allows you to check in others for them by tagging your friends. So if you are going to use the new Facebook Places, make sure you take a look at your privacy settings.
