Google Voice - Go & Get It!

by JEB & Company Staff

After over a year of keeping Google Voice closed to people by invitation only, Google Voice is now open to the public. Google Voice is a free service offered to help people manage all of their phone numbers. When you sign up for a Google Voice account you pick a phone number that is the only number that you will ever need. You then point all of your existing phone numbers (home, office, cell, and any others that you want) to your Google Voice number. Basically you have one phone number for all of your needs and then you can tell Google Voice how to route your calls.

With Google Voice you can make free calls to anywhere in the US or Canada.  Some of the other features are: Voicemail to email with call transcription, free text messaging, caller screening, call recording and transcription and an easy to use control panel. Additionally, Google offers a free app for you to install on your smart phone for easy integration.

For more information and to sign up for a Google Voice account click here.

Tip of the Month

Be Careful of Facebook Scams

Last week Facebook announced that it has reached 500 million users. While Facebook is a great site to connect and stay in touch with friends and family, there are also things that you need to be aware of while using Facebook. There are several scams that have been reported in the past month that are designed to get your personal information. The scammers use a popular or well known company to hide behind. For example, last week there was a"Fan Page" titled OMG! McDonalds might shutdown because of this! Once you "Liked" the page you were taken to a survey that was designed to steal your personal information. Additionally, the page is then added to your newsfeed to scam all of your friends as well.

So what should you do when you come across something like this? Our advice, as always, is not to click on links like these. If a Facebook page or any site insists that you share a piece of content or do a survey before reaching the promised destination, it's likely a scam. Never give away your personal info. Finally, if you've fallen for these (or similar) scams, remove the message from your status, newsfeed, and your "Likes" and Interests in the "Edit my Profile"menu.

Poll of the Month

Antennagate

On June 24th Apple released an update to its popular iPhone with the iPhone 4.  The new iPhone was filled with new features that improved on the already popular smartphone. One of the biggest complaints about the iPhone is its reception issues and dropped calls. So Apple decided to move the antenna from the inside of the phone and embed it into the caseing of the phone's frame.

Once the iPhone 4  was released, reports started popping up immediately that if the phone was held a certain way, calls would drop.  Apple CEO Steve Jobs even went as far as to say people are holding the phone wrong or to buy a case. But the final blow came when Consumer Reports said that they cannot recommend the iPhone 4 due to the antenna issue. This prompted Apple to hold a press confrence to address the issue.

At the Antennagate press conference Steve Jobs spoke about the successful launch of the iPhone 4.  He announced that a software update has been released and that all iPhone 4 owners are entitled to a free case.

While the cases do eliminate the antenna issue, was this really a solution to the problem?
